One of my favorite movies of all times is 'The Devil Wears Prada' and I watch it every single year to date. When I first saw this movie, the designer inside of me wanted to open The Book and see all the designs and styles and type treatments inside. I was drawn in by the heavy use of stylized photography and clean typography in editorial work both fictional and real.
I wanted to branch out of my usual illustration and web work to explore a bit or editorial/fashion design. I've always loved the look of editorial design and am attracted to the boldness that these types of images create, especially when they are used in branding and store imagery. I focused primarily on a Winter season but designed a few spring items as well, given that the two seasons typically have very different color and light usage.
In this exploration, I wanted to focus on editorial style images as they innately give the viewer a perception of higher quality. This idea has been instilled in society by the likes of Gucci, YSL, Chanel, etc. and may not encompass 100% of the viewer/customer base, but does align with a majority in our current society.
The primary focus of the images themselves were to showcase the lifestyle of the brand - an enjoyable, elevated style for the everyday woman. In order to convey the 'everyday woman' feeling, I primarily selected images that were not photo shoot set heavy and were more location driven, with a focus on movement - a theme that was heavily explored in the images for the spring window layout. As for the fashion choices in the images themselves, I did not personally set a limitation for colors, textures, or actual style itself and instead wanted to highlight these elements. The main goal was for the image to speak for itself in most cases, and be aided be copy for advertisement sake in others. This was a very fun challenge to bridge the gap between no text and a large amount of text for a given item in relation to it's purpose within the brand or campaign.
I hope to continue to expand on this concept and would be grateful to gain real world experience in a role working on similar projects.
This exploration included image sourcing, photo editing and enlarging, typography layout, copy writing, mockup design, and texture overlays. All images used in this exploration were sourced through Pinterest, Pixabay, Unsplash, and Adobe Stock with mockups sources through Behance creators.
